Personalized and focused tutoring
for children (K-6) and adult ESL/ELL learners

About Me.

I offer personalized and focused tutoring for primary grade students and ELL (English Language Learner) students in York Region. All classes are in my home in Newmarket or online.

I am an Ontario certified teacher (OCT) and have been teaching and tutoring for over 32 years.  I have worked in a variety of classroom settings from K-6, including the role of an ELL teacher and Reading Recovery teacher.  I have also had the amazing experience of working in a private, summer school in Taiwan, where I taught English to grade 6 and 7 students.

From my experience, I have seen how beneficial one-on-one and small group support is for ELL students, and for those who require extra time and support to solidify new learning. I also know, first hand, how challenging it can be to help these students, who need it most, in a regular classroom setting.

Teaching is truly a passion that I am so grateful to have fulfilled for the past 32 years. I would love to help you or your child gain the confidence you need to be successful in your learning journey.

Specialties.

  • Reading

I am a trained and certified Reading Recovery teacher and have many proven strategies and exercises that I use to help students learn to read and most importantly, improve their reading comprehension skills so that they are reading for understanding. When working with older students,  I like to engage them in texts that offer some challenging vocabulary, longer passages and are of high interest. Most importantly, I want the student to read for the enjoyment of reading.

  • Writing

Learning to write is an involved process for children. I have many strategies to help the early writer learn the basic sounding out skills that they need to successfully write words. Once the student is confident in sounding out words, I teach them to create sentences, brainstorm ideas and learn to write in a variety of forms from letters, comics, paragraphs, non-fiction texts to their own personal and fictional stories.

  • Mathematics (Kindergarten to Grade 4)

At the primary grade level,  discovery and inquiry based learning are often used in many classrooms. Although these strategies are highly engaging and interesting for the class, some children require more time and repetition with basic skills and concepts so that they can confidently engage in activities. Playing math games, learning about the calendar, memorizing math facts and solving number problems in a variety of ways are just a few of the many concepts and strategies I use to teach math. Having fun, while using hands-on materials such as number cubes, dice and number lines are also important when working with young learners. I will provide these materials while working with your child.  I have taught math in classrooms from Kindergarten to grade 4 and can provide your child with the tools they need to feel more confident and successful in math.

  • English Language Learners (ELL) (ESL) – Adults and Children

Learning a new language can be extremely challenging and at times overwhelming for students. In a one-on-one, or small group setting,  I have programs and proven strategies to help them become successful and confident in English.  Using lots of pictures and texts, having real conversations about topics of interest and writing from their own experiences in their first and second language, are just a few of the many ways I can help the ELL/ESL student acquire the strategies they need to excel in English.

For adults, I will engage them in real conversations that are necessary and helpful in every day interactions. I will also support them with specific areas of need, such as workplace documents, understanding their child’s reports and any other areas of interest such as news, online content, and shopping.

Some Kind Words.

Lynda is my daughter’s favourite tutor. She has an exceptional ability to pinpoint and address the specific areas where my daughter needs improvement. Meanwhile, she can create a learning environment that is not only effective but also enjoyable. My daughter looks forward to Lynda’s class every week. Thank you, Lynda, for your expertise and dedication, which have greatly benefited my daughter’s literacy skills.

Enli Zhang, Parent of child Lynda tutors

Lynda has been an absolutely amazing addition to our family!  From day one, she has worked patiently with all three of our children during tutoring each week.  She comes prepared with fun and age appropriate activities to engage the kids in, and they are always sad when she leaves. We are so thankful to have found Lynda as a tutor as she goes above and beyond each session!  Thanks for all you do!

Jenn Brennen, Parent of children Lynda tutors

I have had the pleasure of teaching with Lynda for four years as a grade partner.  I continue to be amazed with the patience, compassion and care she shows towards the members of our school community.  She has the ability to connect with each and every one of her students and their families, values their stories, and helps them to develop empathy towards each other.  She has devoted herself to being a lifelong learner and will succeed in any role she chooses.”

Stacey Williams, Colleague

Lynda Goudy’s care for her students is unlike any other.  She goes above and beyond for all, particularly those with special education needs.  Lynda not only delivers curriculum but teaches students how to learn and self-regulate.  When I think of Lynda’s class, I think of smiling students who are so actively engaged that they don’t even realize that they are learning.

Laura Naccarato, Special Education Teacher / Colleague
Our journey with Mrs. Goudy started just a few days before the official beginning of grade 1.
Mrs. Goudy invited our son to meet her, just to make sure his first day at grade one would be more comfortable and less stressful. Almost a year later we still feel fortunate to have Mrs. Goudy as his teacher. With her passion for teaching, endless patience and support , lifetime experience as an educator, and most important – love for the kids,
He found his confidence, curiosity and love for reading and learning. As parents we always felt Mrs. Goudy’s effort and dedication to provide the best education, using multiple media, especially during the pandemic. Her skills and creativity made the online lessons fun, colourful and exciting!
Mrs. Goudy was always there to answer our questions, to update us and to provide professional guidance to support his learning from home. Her connection with kids is inspiring and her positivity is contagious:)
We were fortunate to have Mrs Goudy as my son’s first grade teacher and we are sure that any child will love to have her as a tutor and every parent will be fortunate.

Q&A.

With the lifting of COVID restrictions, I recommend teaching in person, at my home. I am fully vaccinated and continue to wear a mask throughout all tutoring sessions. I am also able to work with your child remotely through Zoom or Google Meet but caution that the desired outcomes are more difficult to achieve in this format.

When working one-on-one with a child, I charge $60.00 for an hour at my home. I am also able to work with two children at the same time for a slightly higher rate if you are interested in this arrangement. This is the same net pay tutors receive from tutor agencies.

I am an Ontario Certified Teacher (retired) who has worked with students from Kindergarten through grade 6 for 32 years.  I am a trained and certified Reading Recovery teacher, a qualified ELL (English Language Learner) teacher and I hold a specialist in Primary Education.  Combining these skills and qualifications make personalized and focused tutoring the greatest opportunity for your child’s success the specific areas of need.

Yes.  In my classroom role, I was able to work with many students who required individualized programs and instruction.  In one-on-one instruction, without the distractions normally found in a busy classroom, the potential for your child’s success is greater.

It is vital for the young child to have brain breaks, where I incorporate games that embed elements of literacy or math.  This helps to make lessons more enjoyable with better learning outcomes.

Yes!  the families I am currently helping continue to renew our arrangements because of the progress their children are making. With me, students don’t say “I have to see my tutor”. They say, “today, I get to see Lynda“.  I will be pleased to put you in touch with them.
